The Daughter of the regiment

by Gaetano Donizetti

January 26, 29, February 1, 3(m), 2013

Nine high Cs for the tenor in one aria, and brilliant coloratura for the soprano, make The Daughter of the Regiment an exciting, sparkling and hilarious opening to the 2013 Season. This inventive production from Italy’s Teatro Comunale di Bologna places the opera in the waning days of World War II. The Opera tells of an orphan French girl adopted by a regiment of soldiers. An independent, tomboy-like spunky girl, Marie loves Tonio, a peasant, but the Marquise tries to marry her off to a rich Duke. She’s thwarted by another “invasion” by the regiment, which frees Marie to marry Tonio. Yes, a happy ending! Cast:  Marie L’ubica Vargicová; Tonio Stephen Costello; Sergeant Sulpice Donato DiStefano; Marquise De Birkenfeld Ewa Podleś; Conductor Yves Abel; Director Emilio Sagi.

samson and delilah

by Camille Saint-Saëns

February 16, 19, 22, 24(m), 2013

The Bible’s Samson and Delilah return to our stage in a production described by The North County Times in 2007 as “…one of the most memorable San Diego Opera productions of the past decade (with) stunning and gargantuan sets, vivid lighting, gorgeous costumes, an erotic ballet and a seeming cast of thousands…” Physically strong though he is, Samson cannot repel the advances of the seductive Delilah. Urged on by the High priest of Dagon she makes him reveal the source of his strength, his hair, which she cuts, rendering him powerless. Captured, blinded, Samson calls on God for forgiveness, destroying the temple and all within it, including the treacherous Delilah. Cast:  Delilah Nadia Krasteva; Samson Clifton Forbis; High Priest of Dagon Tómas Tómasson; Old Hebrew Gregory Reinhart; Conductor Karen Keltner; Director Lesley Koenig.

murder in the cathedral

by Ildebrando Pizzetti

March 30, April 2, 5, 7(m), 2013

Archbishop Thomas Becket, brutally murdered in Canterbury Cathedral in December 1170 defending his church against the intrusions of King Henry II, became a Christian martyr and Saint at whose tomb Henry was forced to pay penance. Did he order the murder, or did his knights take matters into their own hands? Based on the T. S. Eliot play, the opera covers the last month of Becket’s life as he struggles with politics, religion and temptation. The lyrical and melodic score reminiscent of Puccini with extraordinary choruses rivaling Turandot, is a tour-de-force for the great bass Ferruccio Furlanetto, starring in this NEW San Diego Opera production.  Cast:  Thomas Becket Ferruccio Furlanetto; Herald Allan Glassman; First Chorus Susan Neves; Conductor Donato Renzetti; Director Ian Campbell; Production Designer Ralph Funicello.

aida

by Giuseppe Verdi

April 20, 23, 26, 28(m), 2013

Zandra Rhodes’ vivid designer’s eye enhances Verdi’s vision of ancient Egypt in this stunning production. Acclaimed in London, San Francisco and Houston, the brilliant sets and costumes are seen in San Diego for the first time, creating a riot of color and pageantry. The tragic love triangle of a Pharaoh’s daughter competing with her own Ethiopian slave for the love of an Egyptian general is one of the most-beloved operas. Filled with great arias and choruses including the famous Triumphal March, Aida demands extraordinary singers in every role. Cast:  Aida Latonia Moore; Amneris Jill Grove; Radames Walter Fraccaro; Amonasro Mark S. Doss; Conductor Daniele Callegari; Director Andrew Sinclair.
