2011 Season Overview
Turandot
January 29, February 1, 4, 6(m) 2011
The world’s most famous aria “Nessun Dorma” sets the stage for the Chinese legend about an icy Princess and the Prince who’s determined to win her love. Passionate tenor Carlo Ventre as Prince Calàf, struggles to solve the riddles of Turandot, sung by the dazzling soprano Lise Lindstrom. Contemporary artist David Hockney’s vibrant sets and Puccini’s exhilarating music will envelop and thrill you.
Der Rosenkavalier
April 3(m), 6, 9, 12 2011
The lushly scored music of Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier brings to life the story of the Marschallin, a beautiful neglected noblewoman. A torrid affair with a young lover brings her intense pleasure, but reinforces her fear of losing him, as well as her beauty and youth. International opera stars Ferruccio Furlanetto and Anja Harteros make their role debuts amidst the dazzling, 18th century opulence of the Austrian Empire.
Faust
April 23, 26, 29, May 1(m) 2011
Sell your soul to the Devil and there’ll be hell to pay! Faust trades his soul for eternal youth, seduces innocent Marguerite, then leaves her to battle the Devil for salvation. Opera’s golden couple, Stephen Costello and Ailyn Pérez, return as Faust and Marguerite, joined by Greer Grimsley, as a fiendishly suave Devil. Journey back to a Gothic Germany, where Gounod’s gorgeous music will sweep you up into a spine-tingling night of opera.
Carmen
May 14, 17, 20, 22(m) 2011
Carmen is hot – play with her and you will get burned. When Carmen callously drops Don José for a superstar Toreador, jealousies ignite - bursting into an emotional bonfire that could destroy them all. Burning up the stage with Bizet’s irresistible melodies will be the sizzling Nino Surguladze, as Carmen, with charismatic tenor Salvatore Licitra as her Don José. Add mantillas and lace, swirling capes and the flair of classic Spain and you’ll be drawn deeply into an evening of unforgettable opera.
